Frequently Asked Questions

What does £12 a month pay for?

Your £12 a month sponsorship helps fund the support and services guests need to access if they going to gain independence and get into a job and a home. Your monthly gifts aren’t limited to an individual bed. You help fund all of the Joel Community's work. Working with partners such as KCAH (Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness) we support between 70 to 100 people experiencing homelessness each year and help them rebuild their lives.

What is the actual cost of running a bed space?

As you may imagine, it costs more than £12 a month to run each bed space at the Joel Community Night Shelter. In fact the true cost of providing a room and supporting someone out of homelessness costs around £7,500 a year which works out at £625 a month. This is why we need a community of valued supporters to help us change the lives of all the people we support.  We ask for £12 a month as we feel that this is an amount sponsors might be able to afford, and an amount that will really make a difference to the Joel Community and the people we support

To find out how your workplace, school or a group of friends can sponsor a bed space in full please get in touch! Sue Cole, our Supporter Relations Coordinator, would be very happy to help:

How can I make changes to my direct debit?

We want to ensure sponsoring a room is as easy as possible. Should you wish to make any changes to how you give, please email Sue Cole at comms@joelcommunity.org Or call the Joel Community on: 07834 577649. We are always very happy to help.

Are the guests featured on your website real?

Yes. They are often former guests who are happy to share their stories with us and all their stories are true. We occasionally change names to protect their identity but there's no exaggeration and no other details have been changed. By sponsoring a room you are helping real guests who are currently staying at the Joel Community Night Shelter.

How long do guests stay at the Joel Community?

The average time that people stay at the Joel Community Night Shelter is around 3 months. Our aim is to ensure a guest moves on when they are able to find appropriate move-on accommodation, often in supported hostels such as the YMCA. This then allows someone else in need to take their place.

Can I visit the Joel Community Night Shelter?

As a valued supporter we would love to show you around the Night Shelter! Please call the Joel Community on: 07834 577649  or email comms@joelcommunity.org

What happens if I cannot continue my Joel Community Bed Sponsorship?

If your circumstances change and you can no longer continue as a Joel Community Bed Sponsor, please just email our Supporter Relations Coordinator, Sue Cole at comms@joelcommunity.org Or call the Joel Community on: 07834 577649.

And don't worry, there are many other ways to support us to help people experiencing homelessness. Likewise, you can reinstate your Joel Community Bed Sponsorship at any time.
